One more morning I step outside
Sun not yet risen
In the east the hills and higher and brighter
Clouds a color between the colors we can name
In the west the moon still rules the sky
The president wants to rule the moon
But let’s not go there
That’s another poem entirely
I throw my arms wide
Take the triple refuge
Chant may all beings be peaceful
May all beings be happy
Then I walk to the end of the driveway
Pick up the newspaper and glance at the headlines
But let’s not go there
That’s another poem entirely
How many times have I written this rant?
Every time I turn around I hear myself
Sounding strangely like the self
I’m not supposed to have
Feeling like that self is not supposed to feel
Pissed off         to put it mildly
But let’s not go there
That’s another poem entirely
